New Yorker-born music creative Princess Nokia (real name Destiny Frasqueri) has released a video for “Tomboy,” a single from her latest EP titled “1992.”
An ode to women with “little titties and a fat belly,” the Mylah Liban-directed visual is filmed in and around New York’s Alphabet City (what’s left of it). The song’s lyrics give pause if only because rap culture is known for glorifying women with big butts and boobs with even female rappers bragging about their assets.
Nokia not only spits hard and with finesse about the Tomboy life, but also embodies the look and the swag, wearing over-sized t-shirts and jeans while roaming through city streets with a freedom of movement much like young males.
In the video, Nokia has no f*cks to give, to the point where there’s a tension that comes from the anticipation of her or her friends being checked by any one of the guys whose paths they cross, which happily never happens. And hey why not, occasionally women should get to play out their fantasies in the movies, too!
Definitely the video throws down a stake for women, who, despite all of the world’s dictates on how a female should look, dress and behave, choose to come exactly as they are, a powerful statement in and of itself.
